Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Assistant Vice President & CFO, University Relations / Vice President and Treasurer/CFO, University of Maryland College Park Foundation is responsible for providing leadership, management, and strategic direction to the UMCP Foundation and to the Division of University Relations (UR). The CFO will manage and oversee all aspects of financial management for UR as well as investment management and treasury services.

This individual will oversee business processes and improvements, including internal policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, operational excellence, efficiency, consistency, and compliance across the division. The CFO plays an integral role in developing and executing all business and entrepreneurial ventures for UR, including but not limited to, support of faculty recruitment with mortgage incentives, planning for acquisition of real property for expansion of office capability, and investment strategy for trusts, annuities, Foundation operating funds, and special consideration endowment funds. The CFO will formulate a strategic financial plan, including a multi-year budget, and oversee all financial activities.

This position will also work directly with university financial and business professionals embedded in the University’s Schools, Colleges, and Units to implement and regularly educate on processes and procedures that ensure philanthropic funds are utilized in a timely manner and according to donor intent. This position will collaborate with the Division of Research in making determinations on funding that is accepted by the Foundation or is processed as a research grant

The CFO will represent the division and the Vice President for University Relations on internal and external committees and boards on campus.

The CFO will also serve as the Vice President and Treasurer/CFO of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation. In this capacity, the CFO is responsible for the business operations, systems, procedures, inter- and intra-university relationships and shall keep regular books and accounts of its funds, investments and properties. In addition, the CFO has general oversight of deposits, checks and other credits to foundation accounts while ensuring all receipts and vouchers for payments made to and all vouchers and checks made by the Foundation are signed in accordance with the Foundation Bylaws.

The CFO will represent the University on multiple internal and external constituencies. They will report directly to the Vice President (VP) of University Relations and serve on the VP’s Senior Leadership team.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
B.S. in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field required
CPA or MBA preferred

Experience:
At least 12 years of successful and progressively responsible financial leadership in higher education, non-profit or similarly complex and decentralized operations. Innovative leader with proven experience in solving problems.

Demonstrated experience managing finance and operations teams and processes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of GAAP, GAAS, FASB, GASB.
  • Knowledge of investment management, information systems, internal and external auditing, employment law, CASE procedures.
  • Knowledge of Business and Contract law.
  • Ability to lead and manage multiple complex business units and provide support and direction to senior professionals in a collaborative manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skilled collaborator with a proactive, engaging, integrative approach to creatively finding solutions and solving problems to operational and strategic issues
  • Ability to build trusting and meaningful relationships and provide high level of customer service across a range of constituencies and stakeholders
  • Ability to successfully engage and motivate diverse groups of individuals and teams at all levels.
  • Ability to provide continual process improvement to internal policies, procedures, and processes

Preferences:

  • General understanding of higher education advancement functions, including but not limited to development, alumni relations, and advancement services.
  • Experience working with a high level volunteer board.
  • Knowledge and understanding of UMD and UMCPF policies and procedures is desirable.

Salary commensurate with education and experience with a base salary starting at $265,000.

This is primarily a sedentary position involving extensive use of desktop computers. The position does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings and events. Will be required to work evenings and weekends as necessary. Available for minimal travel.
