THE OPPORTUNITY: The Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) will design and lead a comprehensive, robust advancement strategy to meet the Guggenheim’s current and future resource challenges as well as its ambitious aspirations. Reporting to the Guggenheim’s Director, the CAO will lead a team of 26, work closely with the Board of Trustees, COO, and fellow members of the Executive Cabinet, and staff the Advancement Committee.



  • Significant leadership experience within a sophisticated fundraising operation, preferably in a major museum or other cultural institution.

  • A genuine passion for the Guggenheim’s global mission and for the importance of art and arts education.

  • Demonstrated success as an innovator.

  • Broad-based knowledge of strategic fundraising program building.

  • Proven track record of success in individual major gift solicitation.

  • Experience leading capital/endowment and/or comprehensive campaigns.

  • Knowledge of the NYC, national, and global philanthropic, business, and cultural communities.

  • A warm, engaging and accessible style.

  • High energy.

  • Entrepreneurial orientation.

  • Superior communication and presentation skills; able to deliver effective, compelling messages.

  • A global citizen; well-traveled and able to navigate nuance, complexity and multiple settings and cultures.

  • The ability to attend evening/weekend events and activities on a regular basis and to travel as needed.

  • A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree in a relevant discipline is preferred.
